As mentioned, we are at the end of a somewhat prolonged heat wave. Like our record highs, the length of heat waves has been considerably longer in the past. Below is a list of some of the longer heat waves to hit southern New England. Notice how many more 8 day heat waves central Connecticut has seen. This is of course due to the fact they are far away from the ocean. It doesn’t mean Boston didn’t have 8, 9 or 10 days in the upper 80s or that one or two days only hit 87F and broke the string. This is why some of this data needs to be investigated deeper before making any sweeping generalizations.

ALSO...SINCE WE ARE LOOKING AT AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TEMPERATURES

Upcoming days

A few things are going to change this week and some will stay the same. First, humidity levels will remain high nearly the entire week. We might get a break towards the weekend, but that is still not a sure thing.

We won’t have a heat wave this week. Temperatures could reach 90 again this week on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday if we get enough sunshine. If we do hit that mark, it won’t be for hours and hours like last week. Showers and thunderstorms are possible nearly the entire week, but the most likely days you will get wet are tomorrows and Wednesday. The showers tomorrow, if they manifest will do so earlier in the day.

Highs will be mainly in the 83-88 degree range with cooler air at the Cape, the Vineyard and Islands. Some parts of outer Cape Ann will also be cooler.

Gardening this week

Are you growing tomatoes this year? If you haven't gotten a tomato plant yet there is actually still time, you might not have tomatoes until late August or early September, but you can still plant. This week, I have a video about my rescue of a tomato plant and how to grow them in containers.
