Twin ring-tail lemurs were born at the Franklin Park Zoo this month. The babies, whose gender is not yet known, joined eight other lemurs at the zoo. All 10 can be seen in the Tropical Forest exhibit. Natives of Madagascar, ring-tailed lemurs are active during the day, the zoo said, and inhabit Madagascar’s dry bush, scrublands, and closed canopy forests.

Baby river otter Molalla, or "Mo" for short, was weighed at the Oregon Zoo on March 15 in Portland, Ore. Molalla weighed about 2 1/2 pounds. They try to weigh the river otter when they can but they have to be fast and sneaky. When the mother leaves to go take a dip in the water they quickly shut the door and take Mo out to get his weight and then quickly put him back in the nest.

An orangutan named Dwi rested on his mother’s arms, five days after his birth at the Amneville zoo in eastern France. These orangutan are an endangered species due to deforestation in Borneo and Sumatra (Indonesia) and their births in captivity are a very unusual event. Mother Julietta arrived in Amneville from Jersey British Island, in 2007.

The Los Angeles Zoo’s Sumatran tiger cubs made their public debut Friday. The L.A. Zoo welcomed the birth of the Sumatran tiger cubs on Aug. 6. Since then, they’ve remained off-exhibit under the care of their mother and Zoo Keepers. While off-exhibit, Zoo fans have followed the cubs’ growth and development on their dedicated web page. This is the third litter of Sumatran tiger cubs born at the Los Angeles Zoo.

Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo announced today the birth of red panda twins – a first for the 99-year-old institution. The twin red pandas, born July 4 to parents Stella Luna and Yang, should be on public view by the end of October, the zoo said in a statement.

Two penguin chicks made their debuts at the New England Aquarium recently. The first two of eight endangered African Penguin chicks hatched at the aquarium this summer, joined the colony on the rocks. They are named Vello and Tag.
