Local students will head back to the classroom looking their best, thanks to free haircuts from Mattapan’s Finest, a Grove Hall-based barber shop and salon.

Despite the rain, families lined the sidewalk outside the Dorchester shop. In addition to haircuts, the business also gave away backpacks and had a BBQ for families.

“When I would take my own kids to their first day of school, I’d see lots of kids without haircuts or backpacks and I had to do something,” explained Jamie Mitchell, owner Mattapan’s Finest. “You want them to have high self-esteem the first day of school because that will stay with them throughout the whole year and a haircut and new backpack really helps with that.”

This was the shop’s fourth “Cuts and Curls Event,” with close to 300 area youth receiving haircuts and schools supplies. The haircuts were performed by barbers and hairdressers from Mattapan’s Finest as well as those from other nearby beauty salons and barber shops.


The school supplies and other costs were supported by area businesses including Hicks Auto Body, one of the lead sponsors.

For the boys, the haircuts were fairly straight-forward, but for girls, they were a little more complicated

Sunday’s event was a family affair with Mitchell’s niece and daughter helping out.

Although it was pouring for most of the day and the lines to get a haircut were long, the youth were all smiles as the barbers went to work.
