Brooklyn Boulders Somerville kicked off its grand opening this Wednesday night. Hundreds of people gathered to cut the ribbon and welcome the multi-dimensional fitness facility into the community with performances, food, music, and plenty of climbing.

Members of the Brooklyn Boulders Somerville team, along with Somerville mayor Joseph Curtatone, cut the ribbon to signify the facility’s opening. “This is not our place, this is your place,” Gavin Haverly of BKBS said. “It belongs to you guys.”

AKA Bistro, based in Lincoln, Mass., catered the event. They provided a variety of hors d’oeuvres to attendees.

Servers from Boston’s Best Bartending Services supplied attendees with a variety of wines and brews.

George Kwong of Brookline scaled the bouldering wall. “It’s a really nice facility with a lot of good climbing,” Kwong said. “And it looks gorgeous.”

Amanda Desrosiers, an experienced climber, made the trip to Somerville just to check out the facility. “We drove up here from New Bedford to check it out,” Desrosiers said. “It’s pretty sick.”

Climbers hung from the steep slopes of the more advanced section of the bouldering wall.

Mickey Hardt of Brookline said he thinks the opening of the facility is a good step for the community. “It’s excellent,” Hardt said. “It’s a great utilization of space and it’s going to bring a lot of cool people to the area.”

Climbers ascended the 120-foot long, 22-foot tall bouldering wall, which is now the biggest of its kind in the country.

Anneli Ornes, 10, has been climbing regularly for two years. She said she is happy that Brooklyn Boulders Somerville expands her options. “It’s pretty good,” Ornes said. “I like to see new routes.”
