The Seaport World Trade Center was nerd central this weekend as costumed fans descended on the waterfront for Boston Comic Con. Some were there to see New Zealand actor Dean Oâ™Gorman, who plays the dwarf character Fili in âœThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.â âœI never did a convention before I did â˜The Hobbit.â™ I didnâ™t really know what to expect from it,â said Oâ™Gorman. âœInitially, it can be a surreal experience when you meet someone whoâ™s dressed up as your character you played in the film.â Especially when itâ™s a girl sporting a gnarly, braided mustache like the one Oâ™Gorman has in the movie. âœWhatâ™s strange is that when I went to Germany this year, there were a lot of people dressed up as our characters and a lot of them were teenage girls, which was surprising,â he said. âœI didnâ™t think a teenage girl would want to dress up as a dwarf but they looked pretty good, actually.â It was the Kiwiâ™s first visit to Boston and he pronounced himself impressed. âœI didnâ™t realize Boston was so easy to get around. In my head, I imagined Boston being this really sprawling city. Itâ™s such a famous city, historic, Iâ™ve always known about it, but then to be here, I walked around it today and I couldnâ™t believe it. Itâ™s like being back in [New Zealand capital] Wellington.â
