8/17 - Remy feels 'disgust'

After an initial silence regarding his son’s arrest on charges of killing his girlfriend, longtime Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy issued a statement this afternoon via his Twitter account expressing shock, grief, and anger.

His son, Jared Remy, is charged with the brutal stabbing death on Thursday night of Jennifer Martel, his longtime girlfriend and mother of his 4-year-old daughter.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to Jenn Martel and her family. Words cannot describe my wife’s and my grief,” Jerry Remy said in the statement. “Son or not, I am at a loss for words articulating my disgust and remorse over this senseless and tragic act. We are heartbroken.”

Jared Remy was initially arrested Tuesday night after an argument with Martel allegedly turned violent. Martel told police that Remy grabbed her by the neck and slammed her into the bathroom mirror.

The younger Remy was arrested and charged with battery and assault with a deadly weapon, but was released Wednesday morning after Martel did not pursue a restraining order against him.

Multiple members of the Martel family have told the Globe that Jennifer did not pursue a restraining order due to pressure from members of Remy’s family. Jerry Remy and other members of the family have not responded to multiple attempts for comment in response to that charge.
