Veterinary students at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University create a cat calendar as a fund-raiser each year.


This year students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends submitted 150 cat photos and 48 were chosen for the calendar.

Melissa De Fabrizio got Beowulf, a 2-year-old Himalayan/Persian mix last year. His previous owners were about to take him to a shelter because they got a new puppy.


“I wanted to give him a tough name because he’s my little warrior,” said De Fabrizio.

Watson and Crick spend most of their time snuggling with or cleaning each other and their sister, Rosalind (not pictured).


“It really is remarkable to me how much they take care of each other,” said Melanie Glass, who adopted the cats last year.

“I got very lucky with some great lighting and a moment when Paloma was willing to put up with being a model for a few minutes,” said Gillian Kruskall of her rescued feral cat.

Four-year-old Dorian Gray is now “great friends” with his younger housemates Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (pictured), said owner Elizabeth Carbone. But it wasn’t always that way.


“When they used to sleep in his favorite basket, he would just lie down on top of them,” said Carbone.

Scott Neabore and his fiancee adopted Misty, a pregnant cat brought to Tufts after she was found with a broken pelvis, and her two kittens (pictured).


For this family portrait, “it took about 150 photos to get one where they were all looking at the camera,” said Neabore.

A 10-year-old Siamese/Maine coon cross with a disregard for personal space, Velcro was born to a pregnant cat adopted by Kate Vezza and her family in Maryland.


Vezza named him Velcro because the seven toes he has on each foot stuck to the carpet when he was a kitten.

Julie Steinhilber adopted Miranda, a rescued feral cat, 17 years ago and the geriatric kitty is still going strong.


“She loved sitting in boxes as a youngster,” said Steinhilber.

Characterized as a “sassypants diva” by her owner, Furby won over Megan Andreassi as a foster cat from the Animal Rescue League of Boston.


The kitten suffered from numerous health problems over the summer and “after so many trips to the vet and sleepless nights, I couldn’t bear to part with her,” Andreassi said.

Elizabeth Knight fell for Murray while volunteering at MSPCA-Boston. Because the stray was brought in with a wound of unknown origin, Murray had to remain quarantined for rabies for six months.


“As soon as he was given a clean bill of health, I adopted him,” said Knight.

The secret to this picture-perfect Halloween pose?


“I had to cut a huge hole in the back of the pumpkin to encourage Milla to walk into it,” said Denise Kelley, who adopted the 9-year-old cat as a kitten.

Catching Mowgli, a 5 year-old Somali, mid-yawn was pure luck, said owner Marie-Anne Faissler.


“I was holding my camera, he yawned, and I said, ‘Oh, Mowgli, please do it again!’” said Faissler.


And for once, he complied.

Barbara Lewis had Popeye for 20 years before he passed away in 2010.


Lewis said her granddaughter Abby, then 4 years old, played Christmas dress-up with Popeye. The large and patient cat held the pose.
