Showers and thunderstorms possible as highs rise toward 80

The hot, humid weather pattern that has settled into Massachusetts won’t dissipate anytime soon, although this week will see milder temperatures and a reduced chance of showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures today in Boston will be in the upper 70s to near 80, according to the National Weather Service.

Dewpoints throughout the state remain unusually high — in the upper 60s to around 70 — making for the warm and muggy conditions the state has been blanketed with.

“That’s a very high dewpoint for southern New England,” said meteorologist Kim Buttrick.

Showers and thunderstorms could touch down throughout the state today, although no more than a quarter of an inch is expected to fall in any area. Boston won’t see any major showers, although a flood watch is in effect for Central and Western Massachusetts today and tonight, according to the Weather Service.

Tuesday will see similar temperatures and precipitation to Monday, but Wednesday will see a marked temperature increase with highs in the mid-80s, according to the weather service. A Bermuda high will reassert itself throughout the state Wednesday, bringing increased temperatures throughout the week and into the weekend.

Independence Day will see some sun, with a high of 88 and a reduced chance of showers and thunderstorms. Friday and the weekend won’t see much change, with highs in the mid-80s to near 90s. Although temperatures could crest at 90 near the end of the week, a heat wave is not expected to hit Boston, Buttrick said.
