Police have identified the two men shot to death Sunday in an apparent murder-suicide in Swansea that allegedly escalated after an argument over money, State Police said today.
Swansea police and State Police responded to a report of shots fired on Stephen French Road around 6 p.m. Sunday and found Mitchell Stevenson, 37, of Tiverton, R.I., fatally shot in a car, State Police said.
Witnesses told police that a single gunshot was heard inside a home on Stephen French Road shortly after a man fled into a house near the car, State Police said. Police entered the home and found Christian Wilson, 43, the resident of the house, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
State Police said their investigation into the deaths indicates that Wilson owed Stevenson money, and Stevenson had driven to Wilsonâ™s home Sunday to collect the debt when the two began arguing.
Wilson allegedly brandished a firearm and fired several shots into Stevensonâ™s car, killing him. Wilson then returned to his home and allegedly shot himself, State Police said.
The investigation is continuing, State Police said.
