The body of a man was recovered from the water at Winthrop Beach Saturday afternoon, the Winthrop Fire Department said.
At about 2 p.m., firefighters received a call from residents near Faun Bar, in the area of Beacon Street and Winthrop Shore Drive, reporting a body floating by the shore, said Fire Captain Charles Flanagan.
When officials arrived, they immediately began trying to resuscitate the man, whom Flanagan estimated to be in his 40s. He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Flanagan said that while Winthrop police continue to investigate the incident, the man “appears to have ingested a lot of water… for the short amount of time we were working on him [there were] no other obvious signs of trauma.â€
He added, “The indication was the person may have been in the water for a substantial amount of time.â€
He added that scratches on the man’s body are “consistent with being washed up at low tide,†because of the rough, rocky sand on the shore.
The identity of the man remains unknown, as police continue to investigate, Flanagan said.
