Drowning death of person in East Boston under investigation

Suffolk District Daniel F. Conley’s office is investigating the death of a woman in her 50s whose body was recovered today near Piers Park in East Boston.

Boston police said they were alerted to a person drowning in the waters off 256 Marginal St. around 4:43 a.m. today.

The woman’s body was recovered around 5:20 a.m. and her death was brought to the attention of law enforcement by a family member, according to Conley’s office.

State Police detectives assigned to Conley’s office are now investigating the woman’s death because her body was found at Piers Park, a Massport-owned property on the East Boston waterfront, prosecutors said.

In a statement, Conley spokesman Jake Wark said the woman’s name is currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin. He said the woman’s name will be released only if authorities conclude her death was the result of criminal activity.
