What’s in the news?


- Martha Coakley, the Democratic state attorney general who lost the 2010 U.S. Senate special election to Republican Scott Brown, is joining the race for Massachusetts governor, her campaign announced Sunday. Coakley planned a formal campaign announcement Monday morning in her hometown of Medford, followed by a three-day blitz of 18 cities and towns.


- A Springfield man faces arraignment today on charges in a weekend car crash that killed two people and wounded two others. Police tell The (Springfield) Republican Jonathan Lopez ran a red light and hit another car -- also fleeing the scene initially.


- Congressman Stephen Lynch will hold a town hall this evening in South Boston on Syria. Lynch opposes the White House for Congress to authorize military action against Syria. The U.N.'s Security Council today will be briefed by the body's chemical weapons inspector on an alleged poison gas attack in the country last month.


- A trial is set to get under way today for a tow truck driver who allegedly rear-ended a car at a red light in 2010, killing a passenger in the car. The crash caused a fire and killed Edward Ma of Lynn. Derek Gallien faces motor vehicle homicide and other charges.


- A legislative panel this week will hold a public hearing on the state's bottle bill. Activists have been pressing to expand the 1982 law to include more beverages -- including bottled water and sports drinks. The hearing will be held tomorrow.
