Boston teachers union gives preliminary nod to Consalvo, Arroyo in mayor's race

With polls showing razor thin margins, the Boston Teachers Union has decided to endorse a mayoral candidate before the prelimary election with Rob Consalvo and Felix G. Arroyo emerging as front runners.

Those two candidates won the initial endorsement of the union’s executive committee and a political advisory committee Monday night—a possible indication the union might endorse two candidates for the sept. 24 preliminary. The endorsement came after lengthy debate, according to the union.

Union membership is scheduled to vote on the endorsements Wednesday afternoon.

Just last week union president Richard Stutman said an endorsement before the preliminary was unlikely because there was no clear consensus on a favorite candidate and said the union would wait for the general election.

This is the first time the union is endorsing in a mayor’s race in more than two decades.
