Temperatures will become torturous today in Massachusetts, with the mercury rising toward 100 degrees in some areas.
Today will be the sixth and hottest day so far of a punishing heat wave. The temperatures will combine with high humidity to make it feel as hot as 110 degrees in the Boston area, according to the National Weather Service. Shortly before 8 a.m., the mercury had already climbed to 85 degrees at Logan International Airport.
âœBostonâ™s record for today is 98 degrees, so breaking that is certainly in the realm of possibility,â said weather service meteorologist Bill Simpson.
Heat advisories and warnings have been issued for the entire state, with the exception of the Cape and islands. Eastern Massachusetts is likely to get the worst of it.
The only relief from the heat today will come from a southwesterly breeze expected to blow through Southeastern Massachusetts. Wind gusts could reach 25 miles per hour, cooling temperatures into the upper 80s.
Tonight will see a slight chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, while the majority of the state should stay dry, according to the weather service. Heat and and humidity will remain uncomfortable tonight, with temperatures only dropping to the upper 70s.
âœIf you donâ™t have air conditioning today, look out,â Simpson said.
