No love for these boats: Cruise mishaps


A fire aboard Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas marked the latest in a string of cruise ship mishaps in the past few years. Review some of the recent incidents.

The cruise ship Carnival Spirit docked at Circular Quay in Sydney, Australia, on May 9 after two Australian passengers went overboard during the 10-day journey. Authorities conducted a search for the couple, a 30-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, who were reported missing after passengers were counted when the Carnival Cruise Lines ship docked. The Carnival Triumph sat in the Gulf of Mexico for five days after an engine-room fire on Feb. 10 disabled the vessel and left 4,2000 people on board without power or working toilets. The disabled ship was towed to harbor off Mobile Bay, Ala. The Coast Guard said a leak in a fuel oil return line caused the fire. Read more about when the ship docked in Alabama.

The Triumph sat in Mobile, Ala., for months after the fire that crippled the ship in the Gulf of Mexico. The vessel was further damaged on April 3 after the being dislodged from its mooring during high winds. The ship finally left Mobile on May 8.

Passengers of the Carnival Dream waited at the international airport to check in for flights back to the United States after their cruise was canceled. The liner was on a week-long cruise and had been due back in Port Canaveral, Fla.

The Carnival Dream moored in harbor in Sint Maarten after its emergency diesel generator malfunctioned during testing and forced the cancellation of the cruise.

A police boat sailed by the grounded cruise ship Costa Concordia off the Tuscan island of Giglio, Italy. The cruise ship ran aground on Jan. 13, 2012, killing 32 people. Rescue crews surveyed the wreckage looking for survivors. The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, will stand trial for the incident.
